Rosacea: How to treat the redness

Rosacea is a chronic inflammation of the skin on the face and is often more frequent in people with light skin. Rosacea can make your face blush more easily. Over time you may notice that your face stays red. Depending on your skin color, redness may be subtle or look more pink or purple. On the cheeks, forehead and nose the skin becomes slightly thickened with small, dilated blood vessels, these are also called spider veins and may be subtle and hard to see, depending on your skin color. The skin of the effected area may feel hot and tender. Pimples and sebum plugs may also appear on your skin as it is a part of the disease, but there are no blackheads like there is with acne, but in some cases, inflammation occurs in the eyes.

What triggers rosacea?

  • Sun or wind
  • Hot drinks
  • Spicey food
  • Alcohol, especially red wine
  • Emotional stress
  • Exercising
  • Very hot and cold temperatures
  • Some makeup
  • Some cosmetic skincare products
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including blood pressure medicines

How to prevent flare-ups?

You can help control your rosacea and prevent it from getting worse by identifying and avoiding the things that cause your rosacea to flare.

Think sun protection

Just a few minutes of sunlight on rosacea-prone skin can lead to uncontrollable redness. To avoid that from happening, you can:

  • Wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
  • Stay out of midday sun
  • Seek shade

Avoid overheating

To avoid a flare-up from heat, you need to prevent overheating from happening, and to do that you can:

  • Sit far enough away from fireplaces, heaters, and other heat sources
  • Dress in layers, so that you can remove clothing if you start to feel overheated
  • If you feel overheated, you can drop a cold, wet cloth around your neck, sip a cold drink and keep cool with a fan or air-conditioning

Use rosacea friendly makeup

If makeup seems to trigger your rosacea, you may still be able to wear makeup, dermatologist just recommend that you:

  • Apply a mild, fragrance-free emollient to your face before applying makeup
  • Use a light, liquid-based foundation that spreads easily
  • Avoid waterproof makeup
  • Avoid heavy foundations that don´t spread easily or require makeup remover

Observe alcohol’s effect

When it comes to flare-ups from alcohol, you may be able to reduce flares if you:

  • Drink white instead of red wine
  • Add soda or lemonade to white wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages to lessen the amount of alcohol
  • Limit yourself to 1 or 2 drinks, and have a large glass of cold water after each drink
  • Not drinking alcohol at all also works 😊

Laser treatment for rosacea

If you choose to use a laser treatment, your doctor will use the heat to collapse your visible blood vessels so they´re no longer visible. This bloodless and mostly painless treatment can greatly reduce redness, thick skin, and visible blood vessels. The laser treatment can treat color differences in the skin such as hemoglobin in connection with redness and rosacea. To receive the laser treatment your skin must be as light as possible. The lighter your skin is, the faster your results will be seen. That is why it is best to start your treatment during the autumn and winter.

The treatment itself takes approx. 5-15 minutes and most people see results already after the first treatment. The dermatologists recommend that the treatment is carried out once a moth for 3-5 months, depending on how bad your case of rosacea is. In addition to that, it is important that your skin is cleansed and that you haven´t been doing any form of solarium, self-tanning creams or sunbathing before the treatment.

So, all in all there are some good opportunities around rosacea treatments to remove or reduce the symptoms of rosacea, even if the disease is chronic. A lot of dermatologists providing treatment for rosacea have the medical knowledge and practical training that enables them to tailor unique rosacea treatments to your exact needs.

If you don’t feel like laser treatment is the way to go don’t worry, because there are also a few good products out there designed solely for rosacea. I say this, because it is important when choosing a product against rosacea, that you consider that the skin care products are specially developed to counteract and prevent redness. Especially rosacea products that contain ingredients that act as vasoconstrictors are effective against this skin disease.
